In the old days, on the Isle of Jersey, there were two sizes of Jersey's, one tall, one short. The larger size of  Jersey was typically found on the islands larger farms and dairies.

In those days the majority of small farmers or crofters worked for the large land owners.  What land that was available for the crofter's private use was put to use feeding  the family.  Every inch counted.  Land that would grow produce was needed to feed the family.   The family's personal

milk cow had to subsist on what ever she could graze from  the unused, untillable ground.  Many times the only grazing land available for family cows was along the roadside, or what little grass grew around the crofters home.  By necessity these Jersey cows had to be smaller, needing less food to be healthy and still provide the needed milk for the crofter's family.

Here in the U.S. this size of Jersey was prized as family milk cows.  Their milk high in protein and butterfat.  Our grandparents may have called them "rabbit eye" or "Guinea" Jersey's.   Commercial dairies began to be interested in the little Jersey cows for their high protein and butterfat.  But the American philosophy of "Bigger is Better" got in the way of the little Jersey.  The American Dairyman started to breed the little Jersey into a larger cow.  As a result of this up-sizing the breed, the commercial Jersey lowered it's protein and butterfat, making it little better than the other larger breeds.

Today it is difficult to find the small Jersey of days gone by.  Difficult but not impossible. Our aim is to breed the smaller version, making it easier and more economical for the family to own.   We strive to breed small or Miniature Jersey Cattle,  46 inches or less.  Our animals are registered with the American Miniature Jersey Association.  We are working toward all our animals being dual registered with both the American Miniature Jersey Association and the American Jersey Cattle Association.
